What to Know About Cyclospora cayetanesis
Over the past several weeks, over 3,000 individuals have been sickened by Cyclospora cayetanesis, a parasite contracted by consuming contaminated produce. Symptoms of the parasite include severe diarrhea, bloating, and cramping.
To date, Oryana is not aware of any cases linked to our produce and has not been alerted to recalls of any products we offer at either store by any of our vendors.
Cyclosporiasis Outbreak Information
According to the public health sources, most cases have been linked to bagged salads and produce sold by Taylor Farms, which also supplies several brands sold by conventional grocers. It is important to note that the CDC and FDA have not identified a single source, and Taylor Farms has announced a full recall list of potentially impacted products.
None of these products are sold at either Oryana location.
How You Can Stay Safe
As always, we encourage shoppers to:
- Wash all fresh produce under clean running water
- Scrub produce with a firm skin with a clean produce brush
- Wash your hands before and after handling food
- Consider cooking foods to 158 degrees Fahrenheit to kill the parasite, as well as other bacteria and viruses
- Throw out or compost any bagged lettuce you may have that is included in Taylor Farms’ recall list
