Our Penny Policy

Our policy only applies to cash transactions – if you use credit, debit, or gift cards, there will be no change to your change!

When you complete a cash transaction, we will round your change up to the nearest 5-cent interval.

  • Bill: $3.51
  • Cash payment: $4.00

The change of $0.49 becomes $0.50 to eliminate the four pennies from the transaction.

A few notes:

  • We will always round up in the customer’s favor
  • Exact change will always be accepted; if you pay with a penny, we will always accept the penny

The End of the Penny

On November 12, 2025, the Philadelphia Mint created the last penny. There are billions of pennies still in circulation, and there are no plans to end their use as legal tender. However, the end of production, combined with the increasing prevalence of electronic payment methods, means that it’s difficult for retailers like Oryana to access a ready supply of pennies for use as change.

Why The Penny Went Away

Put simply, pennies don’t make cents. Minting a penny costs four times as much as it is worth. Plus, cash isn’t king anymore. All cash transactions represent 14%-18% of all in-person retail transactions and less than 10% of the total transaction values.

Many of us will miss the days of buying candy for a few cents, or the simple pleasure of finding a penny (face up, of course) on the sidewalk for good luck. Know that Oryana will always prioritize your convenience in every way that we can, including providing accessible payment options.
