Traverse City is a world–renowned place to live – and visit – and we think it’s on par with some of the best culinary destinations on the planet. But in preparing for our annual celebration of all-things frankfurter, we started wondering; why doesn’t Traverse City have its own hot dog?
You’ve heard of the Chicago Dog and Detroit Coney. Now, meet the Traverse City Dog!
What Is a Traverse City Dog?
Oryana’s Traverse City dog combines three simple, delightful ingredients to create one unmistakable frank. Served on a grilled or boiled pork hot dog, we chose three flavors to bring TC to life (in glizzy form, at least):
- Cherry relish: Made with cherries, red onions, and a sweet tease of brown sugar and cinnamon, you knew the Cherry Capital of the World would feature its iconic fruit on its frankfurter.
- White onion: Fresh, diced white onion adds bite and crunch to offset the sweetness of cherry and adds a visual pop!
- Dijion mustard: More spice is always nice, and Dijon mustard is the perfect addition to this Northern Michigan treat!
We’ve had some early adopters replace Dijion mustard with a spicy brown variety – you can certainly give it a try!

Our Traverse City Hot Dog Recipe
Like all hot dog interpretations, there is certainly some room to personalize your creation, but here’s how we recommend making your TC dog.
Ingredients
- Pork hot dogs (plan on at least two per guest – they’re that good)
- Brioche buns
- ½ cup cherry relish (approximately 2 teaspoons per hot dog)
- 1 cup white onions, diced
- 1/4 cup Dijon mustard (approximately 1 teaspoon per hot dog)
Instructions
- Boil or grill pork hot dogs for approximately 10 minutes. Rotate dogs every 2 minutes on the grill!
- Warm/toast the Brioche buns.
- On the grill, place buns on the grill for 1 minute per side.
- On the stove, place buns in a steamer basket over the boiling water for 2 minutes.
- Place buns on a serving platter and add hot dogs.
- Add toppings in this order: cherry relish, Dijon mustard, white diced onions.
Serve with fresh greens, coleslaw, potato salad, and a refreshing sparkling water – or whatever delights your palette.
