Summer Toast Adventure
Avocado toast still hogs the spotlight when anyone talks about toast adornment, but you can top your toast with countless combinations of delicious things for a choose-your-own-adventure breakfast. A plain piece of crunchy whole grain or sourdough toast is the perfect blank canvas for any sweet or savory ingredient mix-up. Here are some fun ideas for a summer morning toast adventure.
Peanut Butter with Fresh Berries and Honey
Sure, bananas are great with peanut butter but why stop there? Just about any fruit you have, including dried fruit, goes great with peanut butter. A drizzle of honey takes it to perfection.
Creme Fraiche with Blueberries, Maple Syrup, & Cinnamon
This combination is almost like a scrumptious dessert.
Smashed Chickpeas with Tahini, Celery, and Chunky Roasted Garlic
Smear some tahini on toast, followed by mashed up chickpeas (mash them with a little olive oil and salt in a small bowl), chopped celery, and roasted garlic bits*. Sprinkle with salt, Za‘atar seasoning and paprika, and drizzle with olive oil. (*Coarsely chop a few cloves of garlic and gently fry in olive until lightly browned.) This is kind of like hummus deconstructed.
Melty Mozzarella & Tomato with Basil (aka caprese toast)
Spread a piece of toast with butter or mayo. Sprinkle on some grated mozzarella cheese and top with sliced tomato. Broil in a toaster oven until cheese is melted. Sprinkle with fresh chopped basil.
Avocado, Bacon, & Tomato
Butter or mayo the toast. Smash half an avocado in a small bowl and spread on the toast. Sprinkle with salt and pepper. Top with chopped tomato and bacon pieces. Add a little more salt.
