Hispanic Heritage Month

September 15 to October 15 is National Hispanic American Heritage Month, where our nation pays tribute to the generations of Hispanic and Latino Americans who have positively influenced our country and society. From food to sports, business, politics, science, education, and the arts, Hispanic culture and achievement has vastly enriched all areas of American life, and one way we would like to pay tribute to this designation is by highlighting one of our great local vendors, Osorio Tacos y Salsas.

Osorio, founded by Miguel and Karla Osorio, is located in Williamsburg, and serves the best Oaxacan-inspired dishes including tacos, chile rellenos, and guacamole. One of their specialties is salsa, which they make fresh daily from scratch, and which Oryana sells.

“When Karla and I got married we came from different Mexican backgrounds,” said Miguel. “Karla is from northern Mexico’s Baja region and I am from the southern region of Oaxaca. Karla was from the big city, and I grew up in the mountain country. A beautiful “Combinacion de Sabores,” combined flavors! These combined flavors bring you a whole range of traditions, spices, and ingredients to give you a truly unique culinary experience.”

“When we prepare our salsas, we remember our childhood. Visions of our grandmother grinding ingredients on the molcajete and the metate, capturing the flavors of our ancestors. I would walk 2.5 hours to and from my grandmother and my mother’s farms. Taking with me only a bule de agua, totpos, and clayudas tortillas with primitive spread on them, and tasajo and queso seco. Modern transportation is nice, but your legs will never get stronger than hiking every day through the Oaxaca countryside. Just like our food, it was a labor of love.”

The next time you’re in Oryana, be sure to try some fresh Osorio salsa to go with your tortilla chips, burritos, or nachos.
