Asian Meatballs
Meatballs
1 cup onion, chopped
4 cloves garlic, chopped
1 teaspoon ginger, chopped
1/3 cup cilantro, chopped, plus extra for garnish
1 lb ground beef
1 lb ground pork
1 tablespoon fish sauce
1 1/2 tablespoons soy sauce
1 teaspoon sesame oil
black pepper
1 egg
1/2 cup bread crumbs
Glaze
1/4 cup soy sauce
1/4 cup cool water
1/2 teaspoon dry ginger
1 teaspoon sesame oil
3 tablespoons maple syrup
1 teaspoon arrowroot or cornstarch
Garnishes: chopped cilantro, sesame seeds
- Place the onion, garlic, ginger, and cilantro in a food processor and process until minced. Combine onion mixture with pork, beef, and remaining ingredients in a bowl and mix well until everything is evenly incorporated.
- Heat oven to 350ºF. Shape meat mixture into smooth 1 inch meatballs. Place meatballs on a rimmed baking sheet or two, giving them plenty of space so they’re not touching, and bake for 30 minutes.
- While meatballs are baking make the glaze. Whisk all the glaze ingredients together in a small saucepan. Bring to a boil, reduce heat, and simmer, uncovered for 10 minutes.
- Remove meatballs from the pan and onto a plate or bowl for serving. Drizzle with glaze, sprinkle with chopped cilantro and sesame seeds and serve with rice.
