In 1989, Annie Withey started Annie’s by selling mac and cheese out of her car trunk. Less than a decade later, she converted her marquee mac and cheese to being fully organic. At the time, larger brands were doubling down on low-cost manufacturing processes and ingredients.

Over the next two decades, Annie’s initiated several important programs, including agricultural scholarships, Grants for Gardens, and other impactful investments to support organic farming and infrastructure.

Who Owns Annie’s Foods?

Annie’s was privately owned until the company went public in 2012. Two years later, the brand was taken private when General Mills acquired the brand in 2014. Today, the brand makes over 300 products in specialized facilities across several states. Every product includes allergen statements that reference the facility’s manufacturing characteristics, such as peanut-, soy-, or wheat-free.
